Safety

Safety in Shanghai, China
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. We experienced very little activity during the day time. After about 6pm the streets became very crowded and difficult to navigate without physical contact with those around you. Keep valuables in secured pockets and don’t carry large bags or backpacks. Be aware of scooters and mopeds on the sidewalks, driving against traffic, or lane-splitting.

  1. Donghua UniversityThree of us spent a day on campus here. It was summer so there wasn’t much activity on campus. There is an international students dorm next to the North entrance to the campus (closest to the metro station). We encountered about 10 students outside, all of which spoke English and knew the area.

  1. Rock & Wood International Youth Hostel https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g308272-d2082574-Reviews-Rock_Wood_International_Youth_Hostel-Shanghai.htmlGeneral: 6RMB per person, per night; comfortable, safe, near inexpensive food and markets, close to metro systemStaff: Spoke English, knowledgeable about the area and metro system, registered us with local law enforcement for us (required in every location you move toRooms: WiFi for each floor, we stayed in an 8-person dorm-style room with lockers for everyone and its own A/C unit. Furniture had been damaged and repaired with DIY style brackets and bolts, but it was comfortable and safe.Lounge area: Open 24 hours, quiet hours 11pm-6am, A/C, WiFi, lounge furniture with coffee tables, dining tables, conference table, small library, and a bar with kitchen (cheaper than a restaurant, more than what our budget could afford).Amenities: washer/dryer per floor, water boiler (necessary to have clean drinking water, but no way to cool it so we bought water frequently), showers and bathrooms kept clean, house cat, outdoors lounge area, “gym” equipment (barbell with approx. 100lbs total in weights), pool table, board games.

People’s Opinions

  1. The phone app Maps.me provided navigation directions anywhere we needed to go, including bus numbers/routes, metro train numbers/routes, and walking times. The metro was very simple to use and got us around town for usually no morethan 4RMB. We never took it more than 4 miles, but that covers more than you could ever need to in a city that large.Bikes are available to rent everywhere and use an app to open them. You need to download the app ahead of time (they take a day to verify), but then you open the app, scan a QR code, and each rental is 1-2RMB depending on which app you’re using. Distance doesn’t affect rental cost. There are a lot of apps for this.

People’s Opinions

  1. Hong Qiao Medical Center (Parkway Center) is a Gold star clinic through IMG. It is no longer open. AVOID.

Communication

Communication in Shanghai, China
Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. Our team got two SIM cards at China Mobile. $32 USD afforded us two plans: 1. 20 min calling, 10gb data, unlimited texting; 2. 150 minutes calling (logistics phone). This was far better than the airport ($42 USD for one plan with less gained).WiFi is available just about anywhere, but you need a local number to connect to it. Most people were comfortable typing in their local phone numbers for us to login.
