Pretty safe, no need to worry… BUT watch yo’ stuff. There are some crafty pick-pocketers in town. Just be smart with your possessions.

Be really careful about pick-pocketing. We think one of our girls got her passport stolen on a public bus (to be fair, she had her passport in the outside pocket of her purse on a crowded public bus). Just be smart and watch your stuff. If your passport does get lost/stolen, you’ll have to go to Beijing to get it replaced and you’ll need to get a new visa to exit China. This could take 3-4 days at minimum.
Visit the Xining International Fellowship Church. It’s along the main road near the major shopping district, right by Pizza Hut. You can take the #2 bus from Min Da University. This Three-Self Church is recognized by the Chinese gov so it’s not “underground”, but most of the attendees are “workers”. My team and I attended our first week in town and we made SO MANY connections that carried us through the month.

Greenhouse Coffee (seconded). This place was very comfortable and American feeling (exposed wood beam structure, burgers, fries, etc.) but the owners are cool people. I second asking them about their vision.
Greenhouse Coffee. The are two locations in Xining – FIND THEM! Best coffee you will have all race. Not to mention the best muffins and cheesecake all race as well. 🙂 & They have an awesome vision behind what they do – ask them about it!If you cant find it on your own, ask any white person you can find in that town – they’ll point you in the right direction!

If you’re staying near Min Da (east campus), you can take the #2 bus into town to see all the major things: shopping, mosques, XIF, the park, etc.
Buses are cheap – 1 yuan per ride – but they’re also very packed and you have to understand the routes well to not get lost. Taxis are easy and relatively cheap… they can be difficult to flag down, though. It’s best to walk to the nearest intersection to try and get one. Be patient. 🙂

Also, visit some of the parks in the city. They’re fun and beautiful, especially in the fall.Go rollerskating. Eat hot pot. Sing KTV/karaoke. Dance with the old people in parks in the mornings/evenings. Have fun!
Go to the countryside and go see the mountains, so beautiful! Or check out a monastery. Or try going to Tibet.
