Safety in Bartica, Guyana What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
Mosquitos are quite vicious in this town. There also may be Zika and malaria. Make sure to have an ample supply of bug spray before coming! It is more expensive there to buy (but is still available).
Bartica is a very small town with an island feel. It is very safe, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else. Women can walk around by themselves in the day, but I would suggest pairs at night. Taxis are safe and can come get you wherever you are. There is a set price of 200 dollars for any drop off in town with Vision Taxi (455-0330). One thing about Guyana in general is that men often make a kissing noise at you as you walk by. At first I thought it was similar to cat calling, and it can be, but most of the time people just want to get your attention.

People’s Opinions
We were the first team to work alongside of Prophetic Anointing Ministries with Pastor Ivor Melville. When we first arrived, Pastor Ivor was really intentional about matching each of us to a ministry/program to maximize our experience, gifts, and abilities. We were connected with the Full Gospel church, secondary schools, the Hope Foundation to teach classes (primarily English) among other things. Our schedules were quite open so I would suggest being intentional about doing things you’re passionate about. Go and meet people at the market, pray at the hospital (they are very open), etc. Pastor Ivor is well connected so if there are other ministries you want to get involved with, he can make sure to connect you to the right people. I would recommend going to Bartica again to further the relationships we started. It sounded like the community had some bad experiences with missionaries previously to our arrival, from other churches/organizations, so make sure to be intentional to serve and be a blessing to everyone you meet.
Lodging

People’s Opinions
Our team stayed in a two-story missionary house owned by the Full Gospel pastor, Apostle Yasin. There are four bedrooms with bunk beds on the second floor with a living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor. There are two bathrooms and showers. Running water is not always the case, but there is a water tank for when it doesn’t work. We made a donation to hire a cleaning lady at the end so our cost was $25 for 5 people for 10 nights.

People’s Opinions
Food is more costly in Bartica than in Georgetown because they import most things. Our team cooked most meals because we had a full kitchen and this was the best way to make our budget stretch of $5 per person. We did meet a woman named Atma who makes bomb curry and fried rice. Call her at 664-2209 a day in advance and she’ll deliver for $200 (1usd). Her husband is a taxi driver we met named Neville (671-5588) There are 2 grocery stores (1st Avenue or 2nd Avenue) that we found and a big market that is open until 5 p.m. on 1st Avenue.

To get to Bartica from Georgetown, take a mini bus from Stabroek Market to Parika (price 500 GYD per person). When you arrive in Parika, walk to Stelling Pier and take a speed boat to Bartica (2,500 GYD per person). Bus drivers often help you if you ask. Once in Bartica, use the taxi service Vision Taxi (#455-0330) for 200 GYD per ride in town (even if you have 5 people squeezed in!). You can walk every where in town if you’d rather save the money.

Everyone speaks English, but be warned! The accent is really difficult to understand as most people mumble a lot!

People’s Opinions
There are a number of waterfalls in the area that you could visit. It is a little difficult to get transportation to them, so tell your ministry contact so he can help you get there. One thing we would have loved to do is go into the interior with the Amerindians, but our time was cut short. Also, WIFI is pretty nonexistent in this city, so be prepared!
