Safety

Safety in Lalitpur, Nepal
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. We were extremely safe the whole time. I often would walk to coffee shops alone, as did most of the squad. There are street dogs everywhere but they are actually so chill. Even after dark its very safe, although I would walk with one other.
  2. It was a very safe place and more of a rural area. My Team stayed in Godawari and we felt safe the entire time of our stay. 2 girls were comfortable walking together even to the next town.

Ministry Summary

Ministry Summary in Lalitpur, Nepal
Breakthroughs? Suggestions? Concerns? On a scale of 1-4 (1 being not at all, 4 being absolutely) how strongly would you recommend another World Race team go to this ministry location & why?

People’s Opinions

  1. We worked with TAMI Asia and it was awesome. The host family is so welcoming and involved. We would visit slums, play soccer with the neighbourhood kids, visit and pray over temples in the mountains, and help women at risk. We also did bar ministry which entailed going to dance bars, befriending the girls who worked there and giving them an out if they wanted one. Our last week with TAMI, we went to the villages in the jungles of Nepal and did ATL(Ask the Lord) type ministry there. We absolutely loved our time in Nepal.
  2. Rajendra Rai – We did house fellowship evangelism the whole month. This included giving messages and testimonies in house all throughout the valley. Interceeding in Hindu/Buddhist temples, and preparing and sharing a 3 day sermon. He has a vision to expand His church and really reach the unreached Nepali people out West. I would rank this ministry a 4! It was an awesome God filled experience, in which God stretched and molded my team in our first month!
  3. 4! This host (and family) will become your family. Love them so much. They sent us on a weeklong trek to encourage the Christians in remote and mountains landscape. Plus, they do soccer outreach to street kids, slum school, equip women at risk, and visit cabin bars to minister to women in the sex trade and so much more!

People’s Opinions

  1. We stayed in the retreat centre for TAMI Asia and it was wonderful. Multiple rooms with beds, western toilets, stand up showers with (sometimes) hot water, and a kitchen nook or full kitchen depending what room you stayed in. We has all-squad month here and the retreat centre held all 52 of us! We hung our hammocks on the roof and did laundry there as well.
  2. Bethel Bethesda the retreat center for TAMI Asia Agape Mission International. Multiple rooms with beds, kitchen with stove top, refrigerator, sink and we added an oven. Bathroom with western toilets and freestanding shower and two sinks. Three floors plus terrace to dry laundry. Bottom floor is the Amad prayer room where we did intercession, worship, soccer, preaching and more. Secure gate to lock every night and lock on front door and rooms. Electricity on for 7hrs a day but solar power compensates for basic lights. Refill water tank plus rain water. Very safe and accommodating stay.

People’s Opinions

  1. Tons of options for food here. You can grocery shop and cook in the kitchens or you can go out. Most of the coffee places also sell food, Kairos, Busy Bean, Somo, and Kaffine to name a few. But there are also lots of restaurants. Evoke, Lazy Gringo, and Roadhouse were some of the favourites. Some of my team and I befriended the owner of Evoke so definitely seek him out!
  2. The food options are abundant here, you have the fantastic opportunity to get some delicious local and international cuisine. In terms of places close to the TAMI house Lazy Gringo, Roadhouse, La Pana, Busy Bean, Kairos, Cafe Soma are all great!
  3. Mo:Mos. Steamed or fried, chicken, buff or veg, these Nepali potstickers are a must for about 50-80 rupees. Tibetan Momo was a favorite with their different sauces and soup appetizer.
  4. Local Nepali snack of ‘banipurri’ and ‘chadpati’ in street buggies. 20 rupees for 8 bannipurri, dry ‘Suka’ or wet ‘bani’ – dry is best. These are like mashed potatoes with spices stuffed in a crunchy shell and dipped in broth. Chadpati is a mix of ramen, rice puffs, onions, potatoes, peas and other goodies mixed with chili and rolled into a paper cone with cardboard scoops for 30 rupees. We fed 5 Americans and 1 Nepali for 100 rupees ($1) with this delicious fast food. Best to wash it down with Mountain Dew!

  5. La Pana is a cute little Argentinian bakery/coffeeshop in Dobighat, Lalitpur. The proceeds all go to support a children’s home that the owners have run for 15 years.

People’s Opinions

  1. Basically everything is in walking distance, but if you need to go into Thamel or further in town there are taxis everywhere, they don’t run more than 300-500 rupees. There are also places to rent bicycles if that sounds fun to you.
  2. Our ministry was in the town of Godwari. If you want to get into the main city with coffee shops here are your directions. You need to catch a micro van into Lagenkhel and it will cost 20-30rs. Lagenkhel is the main central bus station (so to speak). here ask around for micro vans to Jalwalakhel and it should cost 10-15rs. Jalwalakhel is where Psalms Field & Higher Ground are located along with some resturants like the Lazy gringo. The trip into the city from Godwari is anywhere from 30-45 minutes.
  3. Taxi is most direct and about 400 rupees for 20 minutes from Thames or the airport to Lalitpur, Dobighat. Ring Road circles Katmandu. You can catch a bus for 15-20 rupees to travel cheaply. The bus boys are calling out the stops as they drive by. Remember the bus stop or ‘CHOK’ closest to home or your destination. Tuk tuk cars were the same as buses. On foot is best around Katmandu for a 20 minute radius. No riding on the roof of vehicles in the city, you will see people and animals on the roof of buses in the country!

Medical

Information on local hospitals / doctors / pharmacies. Where would someone go in a medical emergency? (addresses and contact info).

People’s Opinions

  1. The hospital (don’t know the name) was a short cab drive away and there are pharmacies everywhere. As in, I saw three in a row at one point. They are both very cheap as well.

Financial

Financial in Lalitpur, Nepal
Location of banks or ATMs, notes about transaction fees, best places to exchange money, and other money related advice.

People’s Opinions

  1. There are four ATMS down the road from the retreat centre. The limits on withdrawals are 10000rs and have fees of 499-500rs per withdrawal (unless you have Charles Schwab or another bank that will refund you)
  2. There are 2 ATMs just up the road from Godwari within walking distance. They work at random times and run out of money a lot! I had to try 5 different times until the ATM did take my card and I was able to withdraw Nepali rupee. The limit on each withdrawal is 10000rs. Just be patient we the ATMS here and be willing to walk to the further ATM or wait until you can get into Jalwalakhel were there is a bank!

Off Days / Fun Activities

Off Days / Fun Activities in Lalitpur, Nepal
What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. About 15 of us booked a trip to The Last Resort to go Bungy Jumping and Canyon Swinging. It was SOOOO much fun and cost about $125 USD for both and it was SO worth it. Thamel is also a great place to go for shopping and eating, its super touristy but a lot of fun. There are plenty of cheap massage places for de-stressing.
  2. We had the chance to go to Pokhara using a local! It was a great way to bless someone with TAMI! We used Grace Life Travel and it was fantastic.
  3. Water Park: in Fun Valley 1hr bus ride outside Katmandu. Admission was 1000 rupees ($10) and 500 for bus ride. Secure lockers, delicious restaurant, built in 2012. Men wore shorts for swimming and women had one pieces with skirts.

People’s Opinions

  1. KISC International Church in Lalitpur close to the Big Mart off the main road (ask your contact). Pastor is Rendell from Alabama and nondenominational style. 70 nations represented. English service with children church, communion, worship, sharing testimonies and prayer requests. High attendance and awesome opportunity to meet other believers in the city. We saw KISC members our whole month and they felt like family.

Tips

People’s Opinions

  1. If you are in Godwari and need wifi, but do not have time to get into Jalwalakhel, just up the road (toward the huge golden buddha) is a hotel called the View. There is a sign out from that says “The Black & White Bar” This is a great place with steady wifi! It is only a 15 minute walk from Rajendras home. It cost us 60rs/hr.
